What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Europe?

Before setting out on your European road trip, make sure you meet the following requirements:

Valid motorcycle license

You must have a valid A or A2 motorcycle license, depending on the bike you plan to rent. When choosing a motorcycle to rent, make sure that its engine capacity and power are supported by your license. It's important to note that if you're coming from a non-EU country, an International Driving License is mandatory. Specifically, travelers from the USA to Europe will also need to obtain an International Driving License before renting a motorcycle.

Age requirement

You must be at least 21 years old to rent a motorcycle in Croatia.

Riding experience

Most rental companies, including ours, expect you to have a minimum of two years of riding experience.

Damage deposit

Expect to leave a refundable security deposit ranging from €900 to €1,500, which can be paid in cash or held on your credit card. Don’t worry — you’ll get it back when you return the motorcycle in good condition.

Mandatory helmet

Wearing a helmet is required by law for all riders in Croatia. If you don’t have your own, we can rent one out to you along with other essential gear.

Motorcycle rental tips for a smoother experience

Gauge your riding prowess and style

Mountain passes and countryside roads can be challenging. Take time to review maps and mark key destinations so you can plan your routes based on your comfort level. And of course, choose a motorcycle that is suitable for your route and your riding.

We’re confident that we have something that will fit your preference perfectly, whether you’re into touring, dual-sport, or even enduro and street bikes.

Book in advance

Booking ahead guarantees that you can reserve your preferred motorcycle and that it’s ready at your chosen pickup point upon arrival. Rent-a-GS Motorcycle Rental has convenient Meet & Greet locations in popular cities such as Zagreb and Dubrovnik. Arriving at another location? You can arrange for our team to deliver it there. Let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.

Get tips from locals

Local knowledge makes a huge difference when you’re exploring new routes. Experienced riders from the area can recommend scenic roads, local eateries, and hidden gems you might otherwise miss. At Rent-a-GS, Mirko, our passionate local rider, is always happy to share his insights and suggest the best motorcycle routes across Croatia and the Balkan region.

Ask about discounts

Planning to rent a motorcycle for more than seven days or traveling with a group? Ask us about discounts! At Rent-a-GS, you can get 10% off bookings for extended rentals or group trips — just send us a quick request when making your reservation.

Must-see destinations with your motorcycle rental in Croatia

Did you know you can go island hopping in Croatia with your motorcycle? From Split, you can take a ferry to Hvar and continue to Korčula, and then catch another ferry along the Dominče–Orebić route to Pelješac, where you’ll reconnect with the mainland! It’s an incredible way to experience Croatia’s coastal charm and scenic landscapes.

Croatia also makes an excellent base for exploring nearby European destinations. Ride north to Slovenia or Hungary, or venture east to Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. No worries, as cross-border travel is already included in our rental price here at Rent-a-GS Motorcycle Rental, ensuring a seamless experience across multiple countries.
