Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Road Routes Worth Riding in Croatia
Planning a motorcycle rental in Croatia on
your next visit? You’ll have a much better riding experience if you skip the
main highways. The smaller, lesser-known roads are much more scenic and much
more engaging to ride. And perhaps best of all, if you're into slow travel and
don't mind making unplanned stops, they will also give you more chances to stop
and enjoy local food and culture!
Senj to Barić Draga
The stretch between Senj and Barić Draga is
one of the most scenic rides along the Adriatic. This section of the E65 winds
through rocky coastal terrain, climbing from just above sea level to around 300
metres. The road throws in both tight turns and sweeping curves. One side gives
you glimpses of the Velebit range and the other follows the coastline with open
views of the sea!
Motorcycle
rental in Croatia makes sense for this road
because it’s smooth and well-maintained. You’ll see what’s coming and the bike
will stay planted. And of course, you'll never go hungry. Along the coast,
there are plenty of small roadside spots serving grilled calamari and other
straightforward but delicious meals that hit the spot after a long day in the
saddle.
The mountain passes near Žuta Lokva and the
Velebit interior
Riding through Žuta Lokva takes you out of
the high mountains and gradually brings in coastal air and quiet green valleys
— far from the usual tourist routes. It’s an easy jump-off point for Northern
Velebit National Park, where the Rožanski and Hajdučki Kukovi reserves wait
just up the road
Plužine–Žabljak national park route,
Montenegro
On the Plužine–Žabljak route, you ride 67.3
kilometres of mountain road near Žabljak, cutting through rugged, high-altitude
terrain. It’s not a casual cruise. The route includes winding sections and
consistent climbs and descents, so you’ll need concentration and some physical
endurance. But in return, you get expansive alpine scenery especially around
Durmitor!
It's usually best to go between March and
October because winter conditions at high elevation can make the road icy or
even impassable. And do note that temperatures drop as you climb even outside
winter, so you should prepare for cooler air.
Split–Makarska–Dubrovnik coastal route
You’ll find one of the most scenic rides in
Croatia’s legendary coastal highway between Split and Dubrovnik. Known as the
Makarska Riviera and part of the famous D8 Adriatic Highway, this stretch lets
you ride along the Dalmatian coastline with uninterrupted views of the Adriatic
Sea.
As you ride south, you’ll see dramatic
cliffs rise on one side while turquoise waters glisten on the other. You can
even stop spontaneously on quiet beaches and the seaside towns to take in the
sights and take a break.
